Finite Diierence and Spectral Models for Numerical Weather Forecasting on a Massively Parallel Computer

چکیده
A computationally intensive part in a model for numerical weather forecasting solves a set of partial diierential equations. There are several techniques to obtain this solution numerically. In this paper we will discuss the implementation of a numerical weather forecasting model on a massively parallel architecture using two techniques: a nite diierence (gridpoint) method and a spectral method. A comparison between the two methods based on their actual performance will be presented. Besides the price/performance ratio of several compute platforms for this forecast model will be discussed.

متن کاملData-parallel numerical methods in a weather forecast model
The results presented in this paper are part of a research project to investigate the possibilities to apply massively parallel architectures for numerical weather forecasting. Within numerical weather forecasting several numerical techniques are used to solve the model equations. This paper compares the performance of implementations on a MasPar system of two techniques, nite di erence and spe...
متن کاملData-Parallel Numerical Weather Forecasting
In this paper we describe the implementation of a numerical weather forecast model on a massively parallel computer system. This model is a production code used for routine weather forecasting at the meteorological institutes of several European countries. The modi cations needed to achieve a data-parallel version of this model without explicit message passing are outlined. The achieved perform...
متن کاملDataparallel Semi-Lagrangian Numerical Weather Forecasting
Different implementations on a massively parallel computer system of a semi-Lagrangian method within the numerical weather forecast model HIRLAM are presented. In principle semi-Lagrangian methods on massively parallel architectures result in irregular communications, i.e., communications between arbitrary processors. It is shown that the fastest implementationincreases the total execution time...

Climate modeling differs from weather forecasting primarily in terms of the spatial resolution and timescales involved. For example, weather models run at high resolution for short periods (from two to 10 days), whereas climate models run for decades or centuries of simulated time at much lower resolution to make the computations tractable. There are on the order of 100,000 to 1 million grid po...
